The Ormiston Chadwick Library

The OC Academy Library offers a calm, bright and welcoming environment where students can enjoy reading and studying.

Mrs Dawson, the Librarian has developed strong links with and is supported by the Education Library Service who provide additional resources in the form of books, project boxes and objects to support the curriculum as well as termly training to support the Accelerated Reader Programme.

Accelerated Reader is an Education Software Program which monitors student progress in reading. Students in years 7, 8 and 3 classes from year 9 are enrolled on the program and progress is closely monitored by Mrs Dawson and the class teacher.

– Students take a test on one of the Library computers to establish their reading level and they are then guided to the bookshelves. All stock is organised and colour coded by level of difficulty. Students must read a book before taking the next step which is to quiz. The result is generated immediately and if any potential problems are identified, the appropriate support / advice is shared with the student.

On completion of a quiz, a score is generated and students are rewarded throughout the year for outstanding effort and achievement.

The program can also generate a Word Count Report and we are well on our way to celebrating our first Word Millionaire! These milestones will be posted on the school website as well as in the Newsletter – so watch this space!

We ask that you support and encourage your child to read each day too as this will help to improve their literacy skills. If, for any reason you are unable to read with your child then they are very welcome to come along after school and read with Mrs Dawson or any of the English department staff.

The Library is also the venue for after school Homework Club each day until 4pm and Book Club each Wednesday after school which is organised by Mr Durr.

The Library is open to staff and students throughout the school day from 8.30am until 4pm.

I look forward to keeping you updated on any future initiatives!

Mrs Dawson
